- 3 cups water
- 2 cups milk
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 5 teaspoons yeast
- 1 1/3 cups oats (quick or regular, not steel cut)- can be ground if you prefer a finer texture
- 15 cups flour
Dissolve yeast in water. Mix with first six ingredients, then add oats, and enough flour to make a dough. Knead to combine. Let rest til doubled. Punch down and shape into four loaves. Let rise in buttered pans til doubled. Bake at 350 F for 30 minutes. Cool on racks.
